Consider using a commute option to reduce pollution, decrease traffic congestion and enjoy a stress-free ride to work.

Commute Options

Carpool
By sharing a ride with one or more people, you can save money on gas, tolls and parking because passengers share these expenses with fellow carpool members. Carpoolers can choose to ride with others as few or as many times per week as desired, giving them the flexibility of driving their own car for pre-arranged meetings or appointments. If you sign up for a rideshare program, we'll provide you with a personalized computer matchlist of people who live and work near you. And we'll give you tips on how to form a carpool. Then it's up to you. You can also go to The Tampa Bay Commuter listings to locate commuters in your neighborhood who want to carpool.

Vanpool
If your commute is lengthy (over 15 miles one way), Bay Area Vanpool may be right for you. Click the Bay Area Vanpool link to learn more about vanpooling.

Public Transit
Riding the bus is a great alternative to riding alone. Contact HART in Hillsborough County (813-254-4278), PSTA in Pinellas County (727-540-1800), PCPT in Pasco County (727) 834-3200, or The Bus of Hernando County (352-754-4444) for route and schedule information. Their rates are affordable and you can sit back and relax.

Biking
Florida has great weather year round. So why not enjoy the great outdoors on your way to work? The expense of bicycling is nothing compared to driving alone. Click here for a list of Bicycle Pools. For those days of unexpected rain, you can load your bike on a bus and get home with the "Bikes on Buses" program. Buses now have racks so your bike can accompany you, or take advantage of the bike lockers and racks located at many bus stops. To find out more about the "Bikes on Buses" program, contact your local public transit agency.

Walking
If you live close to work, why not walk? Sometimes it takes less time to walk to work than it does to drive. And, it's great exercise!

Telework
How would you like to go to work and not even leave your house? Try teleworking. This modern commute option is quickly catching on, and there are many benefits and cost savings. In many cases the equipment to facilitate this option is a minimal investment. Click here to learn more about Telework Tampa Bay.

Compressed Work Week
Would you like to work four days a week, every week? Many companies and employees are favorable to four ten hours/day work weeks. This alternative can cut fuel consumption and traffic by as much as 20 percent.

Flexible Work Week
Due to constraints, some companies cannot offer a compressed work week. Another option would be for them to slide your schedule so that you are not driving to and from work during the peak rush hour times. This could save you time and money by not burning gas while idling in traffic. Imagine driving to work in less time with less stress!

Emergency Ride Home
The Emergency Ride Home (ERH) Program ensures that you'll never be stranded at work. If you carpool, vanpool, ride the bus, bicycle or walk to work at least two (2) days a week, you may be eligible for a FREE* (or low cost) taxi ride home. The ERH Program will pay for your ride home in the following cases:

  • Personal or family emergency
  • Unscheduled overtime
  • Sickness
  • Carpool/Vanpool partners have an emergency

It's easy to use! Register for the ERH Program by calling BACS at 1-800-998-RIDE (7433). Once registered, you'll receive a ERH I.D. card. The I.D. card, along with a ERH voucher and a picture I.D., is all you need for your emergency trip home. The voucher lists names and numbers of participating taxi companies. Complete your section of the voucher, have it signed by your supervisor and give it to the driver. That's all you have to do. And you can use the ERH Program up to eight (8) times a year!** To register, complete the form.

* Customers will have the first $100 of their taxi fare paid. Anything in excess of $100 will be billed to the employee.

** You must re-register for the ERH Program every year.
